Some of the smoothest riders in the world use a bunch of static hops to keep maximum control. You don't have to do the manifesto style in order to be a smooth rider.

you're not supposed to pedal kick to hop into place. the brake should be held the whole time until you give the kick to go up or forward... you should hold the brake and use your leggs to keep the bike into place. study the way pro riders do it in their vids.

Instead of hopping your whole body to hop into place, try using your knees/ankles only.
